We are halfway through National Yoga Month, and I’m loving the opportunity to connect with the theme this year!
As someone who loves any reason to celebrate, I’m always thrilled to embrace a holiday dedicated to something so close to my heart: yoga! At Ashley Flowers Yoga, every month is yoga month, but having a dedicated month encourages us to pause, contemplate ourselves, and reflect on our practice.
You’ve heard me say it before: “Yoga is the art and science of getting to know yourself.” Setting aside special time for reflection can really help us see how far we’ve come and consider any course corrections needed to get where we want to go.
A Whole Month!
Yoga is more than just a physical practice—it’s a journey, a lifelong path of self-discovery and growth. The goal of yoga isn’t something you accomplish in a single day or class. Even a month isn’t long enough, but it gets us closer to the idea that the unfolding of yoga is an ongoing process that requires dedication, consistency, and the willingness to return to the mat again and again.
Check In
To honor National Yoga Month this year, I’ve been encouraging folks to take time and really contemplate what their practice means to them. I have loved hearing your responses and have really been so inspired to look at my practice from new angles. The one that stands out the most was this one: “I am doing yoga to try and cultivate as much patience with myself as I have with others.” That response really struck a chord because it made me realize that part of the reason I practice yoga is to cultivate as much patience with the others as I have with myself. What a realization!
It constantly amazes me how different our inner landscapes can be from one another! I have always firmly believed in compassion through understanding. Whether it’s understanding yourself or others, compassion flows freely when we truly understand. This is part of why National Yoga Month encourages us to talk about yoga—whether with your yoga friends or your non-yoga friends. What might we learn by sharing our experiences? How might we inspire others?
3 Ways to Celebrate
It’s always the right time to celebrate Yoga so whenever you read this here are a few fun and simple ways to honor your yoga practice:
- Something New Under the Sun: Explore a new style of yoga! There are so many different styles of yoga and each teacher, studio, location, and community bring their own special sauce to the practice. Trying something new can spark fresh inspiration.
- Daily Practice: Challenge yourself to practice every day, even if it’s just for five minutes. Consistency is key, and practicing a little each day can be more sustainable than overcommitting and burning out. It could be as simple as taking a moment when you wake up or while enjoying your coffee to close your eyes, take some deep mindful breaths, and check in with your body.
- Connect: Share your love of yoga by inviting a friend to practice with you. You build community and you build each other up!
National Yoga Month reminds us that our yoga practice is a journey, not a destination. I have plenty of fun classes offering something unique and different, and I work hard to encourage community and connection in all my classes! I hope to see you out there!
